How to Fix a Running Toilet in 5 Easy Steps

February 04, 20243 min read

“Problems are not stop signs, they are guidelines.” - Robert H. Schuller.

Is your toilet constantly running, wasting water, and driving up your utility bill? You’re not alone! A running toilet is a common issue that can be easily fixed with a few simple steps. At Brooks Handyman Services, we believe in empowering homeowners with the knowledge to tackle everyday repairs. Follow our step-by-step guide to stop that running toilet and save money.

Step 1: Identify the Problem

The Tip: Understanding the cause of the running toilet is the first step to fixing it.

How to Do It:

  1. Remove the Tank Lid: Carefully take off the tank lid and set it aside.

  2. Check the Flapper: Observe if the flapper (the rubber piece at the bottom of the tank) is sealing properly. If it’s worn out or not sealing, it may need replacement.

  3. Inspect the Fill Valve: Make sure the fill valve (where water enters the tank) is functioning correctly. If water continues to flow after the tank is full, the fill valve may be the issue.

  4. Look at the Float: Check if the float (the plastic ball or cup) is set at the correct height. If it’s too high, water will overflow into the overflow tube and cause constant running.

Step 2: Adjust the Float

The Tip: The float controls the water level in the tank. Adjusting it can stop the water from running.

How to Do It:

  1. Locate the Adjustment Screw: Find the screw on top of the fill valve.

  2. Turn the Screw: Use a screwdriver to turn the screw clockwise to lower the water level or counterclockwise to raise it.

  3. Test the Water Level: Flush the toilet and observe the water level. It should be about an inch below the overflow tube.

Step 3: Replace the Flapper

The Tip: A worn-out flapper is a common cause of a running toilet. Replacing it is a simple fix.

How to Do It:

  1. Turn Off the Water Supply: Locate the shut-off valve behind the toilet and turn it off.

  2. Drain the Tank: Flush the toilet to empty the tank.

  3. Remove the Old Flapper: Detach the flapper from the chain and unhook it from the flush valve.

  4. Install the New Flapper: Hook the new flapper onto the flush valve and attach the chain.

Step 4: Adjust the Fill Valve

The Tip: If adjusting the float didn’t work, you might need to adjust or replace the fill valve.

How to Do It:

  1. Turn Off the Water Supply: Shut off the water supply to the toilet.

  2. Drain the Tank: Flush the toilet to empty the tank.

  3. Remove the Old Fill Valve: Unscrew the fill valve from the bottom of the tank.

  4. Install the New Fill Valve: Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to install the new fill valve.

  5. Adjust the Water Level: Use the adjustment screw to set the correct water level.

Step 5: Check for Leaks

The Tip: Ensuring there are no leaks will prevent further water waste and running issues.

How to Do It:

  1. Turn the Water Supply Back On: Open the shut-off valve and let the tank fill.

  2. Check for Leaks: Look around the base of the toilet and inside the tank for any signs of water leakage.

By following these steps, you can easily fix a running toilet and save both water and money. If you find the issue persists, don’t hesitate to reach out to Brooks Handyman Services for professional assistance. We are always here to help with all your plumbing and home maintenance needs.
